Today, a local news story from Linden, North Carolina illustrates the kind of abrupt changes unexpected medical expenses can visit on the lives of ordinary Americans--even those who aren't pushed to the point of bankruptcy.
Terry and Jamie Martin were a typical two-income family when their son Lawrence, now 8, was mauled by a dog at his babysitter's house. Jamie gave up her job to stay home with Lawrence after he was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety. Terry is still employed full time, but does not have medical insurance, leaving them with $12,000 in unpaid medical bills. Now the family is facing foreclosure on their home on March 13, and a
local news station is soliciting donations to help them save their home.
